When life hands you Taco Tuesday & Cinco de Mayo, you make Tequila Tuesday happen.

Tequila is my alcohol of choice and Cinco de Mayo is a good reason to indulge a little today.

Unfortunately macro counting and fitness goals aren’t especially keen to drinking. Which is why I’ve been practicing with lighter sugar and lower carb options.

I’m not a fan of sweet or tarty cocktails. I seriously dislike ordering a margarita at a bar/restaurant and getting something too sweet or too tangy to even enjoy. I prefer lighter and refreshing cocktails. Especially ones I can make at home. It’s less expensive too. Win-win for me and since the majority of us are still home I thought I'd share my take on skinny margaritas.

First, tequila cocktail basics:

grapefruit soda + tequila = palomas

lime juice + orange liqueur + tequila = margarita

orange juice + tequila + grenadine = tequila sunrise

Keep that in mind as they all influenced these skinny versions listed.

MARGARITA

My skinny version was inspired by both the margarita and the tequila sunrise. Instead of pre-made lime mixes and orange liqueur, I squeeze an orange for fresh OJ and lighten it up with diet 7-up.

Breakdown:

1/2 cup Ice

1 orange squeezed for juice (lime or lemon juice works too)

1 cup of 7-UP (lemon/lime soda)

1-2 shots of Tequila (Reposado)

1 orange slice for garnish

1. Salt or Tajin the rim of anmason jar or cup.

2. Rub lime wedge around the rim, turn glass over into plate of Tajin or salt. Make cookie cutter motions and done.

3. Carefully place ice into the glass followed by shot(s) of tequila, fresh squeezed orange juice and 7-UP. Give it a stir and garnish with orange slice.

You can also replace the orange portion with fresh squeezed lime. I say try both.

PALOMA

Palomas are an all time favorite of mine and this skinny version is my go to home cocktail. Instead of regular Squirt soda I use diet. Done. That's how simple it is.

Breakdown:

1/2 cup Ice

1 cup Diet Squirt (grapefruit soda)

1-2 shots of Tequila (Reposado)

*optional pinch/slice of lime for garnish

1. Salt or Tajin the rim of a mason jar or cup.

2. Rub lime wedge around the rim, turn glass over into plate of Tajin or salt. Make cookie cutter motions and done.

3. Carefully place ice into the glass followed by shot(s) of tequila and squirt. Give it a stir and done.

As always, feel free to adjust ice, tequila and soda to your liking. I prefer Reposados over Blanco (Silver) Tequila. Anejo Tequilas are just aged longer so don't feel obligated to purchase Anejo unless it's your personal preference.

Salud & Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

Xx Dee
