I'm currently reading Rising Strong by Brené Brown. I'm on chapter 4. I'll spare us all a half-assed review.
Instead, lets talk about creativity. In what I've read thus far, the topic is constant. Brené believes we're all creative people.
"There are only people who use their creativity and people who don't. Unused creativity doesn't just disappear. It lives within us until it's expressed, neglected to death, or suffocated by resentment and fear."
I never thought about this before. I also never considered myself a creative person. I don't sing. I don't draw. I don't paint or do anything artsy. I'm not creative. Then I read Brené's statement and the surrounding context. I started thinking...To create is to bring (something) into existense. Writing is creating. Pinning is creating. Blogging is creating. I am creative.
Writing and blogging allow me to release the thoughts in my head through storytelling and pictures. By doing this my (all) thoughts are acknowledged and nurtured in some way. They're not ignored. I suppose this is why they say not to bottle your emotions. Emotion is energy in motion. It will come out one way or another. I think that's the resentment and fear she's talking about. We bottle so much of ourselves up, that we cause ourselves harm.
If you're a Brené fan, you know that the basis of her work is vulnerability. In my opinion, creativity is vulnerability. We fear sharing. We fear executing on our goals and aspirations the same way we fear sharing the pain and hurt in our lives. Emotional vulnerability is real and it runs deep. So deep that we live our lives hiding big portions of ourselves.
Embrace your voice. The good, the bad and the ugly. Own it all. Your voice is your creativity and you have the power to create the things you envision. This is the magnitude of creativity...Manifestation. Think about it.
Don't limit your imagination.
If I can encourage you to do one thing, it is to create the things you imagine. Sometimes you have to look within to find what you're looking for and when you find it, share it. You're the source of the creation you seek.
